AFTER LAST YEAR’S SUCCESS – IT’S BACK!
Don’t fancy a trip to Russia ? The good news is that this year, the World Cup is coming to you. That’s right folks, Merton FC is staging a 5/6-a-side World Cup on Saturday 19th May at the Hood (assuming all league games are done by then – we may have to do it a week later!!!!!).
Our plans at this stage are provisional depending on numbers, but the aim is to organise 8 senior teams, with squads of roughly 8 players each. Ideally, we will have seven pots, each containing names from the respective seven senior teams at the Club. We will then draw one name from each pot to compile each team, so that there is a good mix of strength from across the club. Goalkeepers will be kept separate and added in thereafter to make up the eighth member of the squad.
The draw, should the enthusiasm warrant it, will be done on Facebook Live closer to the time, thus making for an enjoyable spectacle. We will then separate the 8 teams into two pools of four, with the four teams in each section playing against each other in a round robin (ie: 3 matches). We will then have semi finals and a final, along with a plate section for those who don’t make the playoffs.
Games will be 20 minutes’ long, with three pitches marked out. That means there will be some opportunity for rest every third game as well. We’ll also mark out a fourth pitch for the Youth section, so that they can stage a similar tournament. Would be great if we could include parents or coaches in their event as well – the more people we can get involved, the better.
We will decide if it is 5 or 6-a-side closer to the time, depending on numbers. Start time will likely be in the region of 1pm. Price is £10 each, including food.
The aim is to make this a family-friendly occasion, with a barbecue afterwards and also other amenities like jumping castles and what not. There will also be THE FA CUP FINAL / YOUTH AWARDS on too.
We’ll be doing this properly too, with a trophy and prize giving.
ALL WE NEED FROM YOU AT THIS STAGE IS TO CONFIRM WHETHER YOU ARE KEEN TO PLAY!!!!

Better results from the youth section today. The weather caused some postponements but of the games that we were able to play- The U9s won 6-1, The U12s won 4-0, The U14s put up a game performance but lost 2-1. But the fight back of the day our U16s won 4-2 after being 2-1 down with only seven minutes left on the clock. Very well done to all our lads!!!!

Rather dismal set of results today. The 1s lost at Old Lyonians 2-0 Nothing went their way today. (pics from that game) Oppo played well and deserved it. Good pitch and nice hospitality. 5s lost 5-1 in a friendly as ref didnt turn up. 7s lost 3-2 (Billy and Josh scored) Tom and Josh MOM joint but Oppo had their cars broken into. Really bad news.

Charity Football Match

A date to save for the diaries – Andy Bitmead’s annual charity match, raising funds for charities that helped to save his son Declan’s life.  A wonderful cause, and a great day down at Sutton. Hope to see you all there.

Not the best set of results today (other than for the Scottish rugby team )… the 1s put in an improved display, but went down 1-0. The 2s (pictured) had the best result of the day, securing a 2-2 draw thanks to goals from Wilgo and DQ. The 3s lost narrowly 2-1, Denys chiming in with yet another goal this season. The 5s had a day to forget, going down 4-0. And the 7s suffered a second-half meltdown, losing 5-2 after being 2-0 up at the interval. Onwards and upwards lads!

Well, a mix of everything in the results today. Let’s start with the good/great news…
The stupendous 6s advance to a CUP FINAL after a remarkable 4-3 triumph AET in North London. Tony with the winner, allegedly on half a leg. Congratulations to Kev and his lads. Now to bring some silverware back to the Hood!
The 1s had a day to forget, going down 7-1. The 2s pulled off a fine 3-1 win, despite Sherbs earning himself a sin bin. Haydn was MOTM on the day, picking up a goal and… a nasty knee injury for his troubles. Wilgo and Dan Rist with the other goals. The 3s went down 4-0. The 4s had another maddening afternoon, going down 4-3 after leading 3-0 at half time. Tough one to take. To round things off, the 5s pulled off an impressive 2-1 win, with Aaron Byrne the goal-scoring hero, and Kieran Lee the man of the moment between the sticks, making a vital penalty save. Great work chaps!

Just the 3 games on today then. The 2s came away with a creditable 1-1 draw in their game. Ackers with the goal. Man most handsome and man least handsome are pictured – you can guess which is which (clue: least handsome defended his title from last week). The 4s Cup run came to an end with a 6-3 defeat. 2 goals for Aaron Loftus, and one for Sonny Kennedy (although a costly sin bin for the latter). The 7s has an up and down game, eventually coming away with a 3-3 draw. 2 goals for Niall Kelly and 1 for Ryan Burchell (although did the latter miss a good chance at the end?). Onwards and upwards, and hopefully a full set of fixtures next week!

Not a greatNot a great set of results but the 1s got a great point in a nil nil draw at Civil Service (Pics from the game) but Rat MOM and Jimbo DOTD, 2 slost 2-1 in a close cup tie with Dom Preece going in goal while Sherbs kept for the 1s and pulling off a string of saves to earn Man Most Handsome while DQ was DOTD> 3s lost 4-2 with Denys MOM and DOTD and he scored so did Sam S/R (???). 4s lost 4-3 after being 3-1 up at HT. and 5s lost 5-2 (scorers Aaron Byrne and Josh F-S) 6s no game 7s game got cancelled.
